1. Shock and Awe
Whether you’ve been trying to conceive or it comes as a surprise, the happy news is still a shock. Of course you know how it happened, but you’re still in awe over the fact that there is a real human being growing in your partner’s stomach.
2. How Can We Afford This?
Okay, there is going to be another mouth to feed and another body to clothe. Will I need another job? Do I have enough insurance? How much do diapers and formula cost, anyway? Will I ever be able to buy anything for myself again? When the baby grows up will I have to sell everything so they can go to college?
Nothing wrong with my libido so how exactly is pregnancy going to effect my sex life? I don’t want to hurt the baby in any way, so this is one of the first questions I need answered.
4. I’m Too Young For This
I really am happy and in some ways proud of myself, but I’m not sure I’m ready to take on this responsibility. I think the first time baby calls me Daddy, I’ll probably automatically say, “Oh you can just call me Chip.” It will be nice to have a little one around though because it will give me a reason to be on the floor playing with all those new toys that look so cool.
I don’t mind doing my share of the household chores, but now I’m going to have to step up my game. When the baby stomach gets too big I’ll be doing all the chores that require bending, including putting on shoes and socks. Mom will probably get tired easier so there will be many more things that I’ll need to accomplish.
6. Midnight Runs
I’m no Paul Revere, but I know I’ll be making midnight runs to the convenience store for that special snack. There will be no sleeping until that craving is satisfied.
7. Potty Breaks
I’ll never be able to go anywhere in a rush and better learn every bathroom stop from my house to the destination. The nice places too, not some dirty gas station restroom. I guess having a baby sit on your bladder all day makes you have to go frequently.
These were some of my initial thoughts when I found out I was going to be a Dad, but the most intense one was “Awesome!”
